Illustrative tropical guest bathroom with stone basin, timber vanity, towels and a dehumidifier

3 dehumidifiers for coastal homes

Already know your home’s air stays humid? Choose a machine that fits your space and routine: a lower-cost start, a bigger tank or pump drainage that reduces carrying.

Still deciding whether to buy? Start with our coastal-home humidity guide, which also leads to our humidity-meter comparison.

Your quickest way to choose

Researched, not personally tested. A practical shortlist—not a claim that one brand is best for every tropical home.

1. Lower-cost start

Frigidaire FHDD2233Y1 · 22 pints/day

For one modest, moderately damp room when simple controls matter more than an app.

Why this one? Lower purchase price and a shallower body. Its smaller tank means more emptying at the same water-collection rate; choose option 2 if that would become a nuisance.

Previously researched owner feedback: 4.7/5 from 97 reviews at Lowe’s. The total includes related models and promotional reviews.

2. Bigger tank, more capacity

Frigidaire FHDD3534Y1 · 35 pints/day

For a space that needs more removal capacity, with a conventional removable tank.

What does the extra money buy? More capacity and twice option 1’s tank volume. Wi-Fi lets you adjust settings remotely; it cannot empty the tank. A full bucket is heavier—you can empty it before it fills.

Previously researched owner feedback: 4.3/5 from 336 reviews at Home Depot. Listing totals can include related versions.

3. Pump drainage, less carrying

Frigidaire FHDP5033Y1 · 50 pints/day

For a larger or wetter space when a suitable drain is above floor level.

Why pay more? The pump can move water uphill to a suitable drain; the other 2 need downhill drainage. Correctly install and periodically check the hose. Without a drainage route, you still empty a bucket.

Previously researched owner feedback: 4.5/5 from 155 reviews at Home Depot. Reports include successful drainage, plus pump and app complaints. This newer model has a shorter track record; tests of older models do not prove its reliability.

What about the electricity bill?

At US$0.20/kWh, using rated power for 8 running hours gives these examples:

Illustrative daily electricity cost
OptionRated powerExample cost
1 · 22 pint250 WUS$0.40
2 · 35 pint360 WUS$0.58
3 · 50 pint + pump470 WUS$0.75

These are calculations, not measured bills. Actual consumption and running time vary. A smaller machine may run longer, so lower wattage does not automatically mean lower cost. All 3 are ENERGY STAR certified and release warm air while running.

Choose capacity for your room

“Pints/day” means removal under test conditions—not tank size or what you must empty daily. Match both area and dampness using ENERGY STAR’s sizing guidance. One portable machine does not promise whole-house control through closed doors.

Follow the model’s placement instructions, especially near bathrooms and splashes. These are 115-volt US models with a stated 1-year parts and labour warranty; elsewhere, choose a locally supported model.

Our recommendation: Option 1 if its capacity suits your room; option 2 for a larger tank and more capacity; option 3 when its extra capacity and pump solve a real problem for you.
